Design for Equity
The Brief
Inspired by Amazon’s initiative, your challenge is to design an inclusive experience in a third-party mobile app for high school students looking for opportunities to fulf ill community service hours or volunteer to help their local community, no matter what their background or ability.
Brainstorming
Our main goal during this project was to follow the theme - design for equity. We kept in mind that we were designing for high school students: Some can drive or easily get a ride, while others can't. Some have dif ferent physical limitations. And everyone has varying skills and interests.
We started by brainstorming considerations for accessibility and the screens we wanted to design.
To make Equivol's volunteer opportunities accessible, we considered the following issues:
-
Visual impairments: blind, color blind, etc.
-
Auditory impairments
-
Other physical impairments
-
Lack of transportation
-
Language barriers
Branding
The name Equivol comes from: Equity + Volunteer = Equivol
Throughout the project, you will see the name Service Match, which served as a placeholder name for the app while we came up with the final name.
Our logo, the puzzle pieces, represents finding the perfect volunteer opportunity that fits into the user's life like a puzzle piece. The heart is a symbol of care and doing good.

Lo-fi
Next, we sketched out the layout of each screen, and mapped out a few key user journeys.

Iterating
We created drafts for user journeys, and we made edits based on feedback from an Amazon mentor.
User Journey 1: Onboarding

We initially wanted students to create an account as soon as they opened the app. But after receiving feedback, we recognized that students would most likely want to browse through volunteer opporunitites before providing personal information.
User Journey 2: Sign up for a volunteer opportunity

After exploring different volunteer opportunities, students will be able to sign up for the ones they're interested in directly through the Equivol app.
User Journey 3: Checking progress and account information

Students can access their progress, saved applications, works in progress, and other account information.
Accessibility through filters

In order to help students find volunteer opportunities that are the most accessible to them, we put a heavy emphasis on filters. Above are three different possibilities that we considered when incorporating the different filters.
Hi-fi
Welcome to Equivol

Takeaways
I really enjoyed my first Adobe Creative Jam! I got the chance to apply my design skills and learned to...
1. Seek out feedback from mentors to improve designs
2. Communicate with my partner well
3. Manage my time well, especially on projects like this with fast-approaching deadlines
